A Portrait and a drawing I want to share.

I have known Jake for a few years, I met him at a Volunteer gig I had in the creative community and he’s always ready with a hug and a really witty comeback line.

I ran into him once at a street party on Granville Island and asked to take his portrait, which was a couple of years ago. He said yes and we both loved the result. I was in the middle of a portrait project, shooting a subject every day and he obliged. He’s very handsome so taking his photo, for me is kind of easy. He’s also a photographer so he knows how the camera can ‘see him’.

I have been taking portraits again, more consistently with film so I asked Jake if I could photograph his face again. He said yes, so here we are.

Using film slows you down, kind of like this period of time in history. The pandemic has slowed us down. It enables you to re-connect with your subject and really make a frame that you have thought about. Something occurs when you use a film that doesn’t happen when you use a digital camera. I miss film, sometimes I find myself pining for it. There is a romance in it, the first 3 images in this grid are shot on film, the last three as too. The black frames around the film images are called the ‘rebate’ its the part of the film that is used to pass it through the camera so you can make exposures. It is the part of the film that has the holes added so it can move along as you wind after each exposure. Every detail is thought out with film and it takes more effort to be confident with film and maybe that is also the appeal for me too.

I used my favourites to make drawings in procreate and I am continuing with this project so please stay tuned. I like the control of the mix of digital and analog, the mixture increases the mystery and the romance and somehow the connection too.

And if you want one reach out, I would love to shoot your face.
